Peter A. Hansen has edited Railroad History since 2007. "It’s a great honor," he writes, "considering that nobody besides the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society publishes anything quite like this. There are a lot of fine rail-oriented periodicals, but we’re the only scholarly journal, specializing in original, primary-source, documented research."

But Hansen also writes for two popular magazines in the railroad field, Trains and Classic Trains. More than 80 articles have borne his byline since 1996, including 10 cover stories. Trains editor Jim Wrinn wrote that Hansen is among the magazine’s "most dynamic authors, covering subjects from historical to contemporary … Incredible range."

Hansen has been a consultant to museums nationwide, including the Smithsonian Institution, California State Railroad Museum, the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Kansas City Union Station, and more. He is also a history consultant to multiple Class I railroads, including Kansas City Southern and Amtrak, for which he wrote and hosted the official 40th anniversary film in 2011. He has collaborated on five award-winning documentaries, including the Amtrak film, with producer Richard Luckin, and their work appears frequently on Public Television. When he’s not working with Luckin, Hansen can often be found in front of the camera, having appeared on CBS, NBC, PBS, and a host of local programs. He is also a popular speaker, as any number of historical societies, museums, and libraries can attest.

Before devoting himself fulltime to rail history, Hansen was a corporate communications executive with Sprint. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Eastern University in St. Davids, Pennsylvania.
