LOCOPIX™ is a compilation of information for locating published photographs of North American steam locomotives. This was compiled from efforts that spanned 30 years by R&LHS member Eugene Lewis, whose career included 33 years as a civil engineer and on the corporate staff of the C&NW.
This sample has indexing for approximately 600 photographs. The entire file, accessible to members only, contains indexing for 34,860 photographs.
The data is presented in three basic sections. (1) The main table, giving the basic information for each photo. In this table the railroad name and the publication identification are abbreviated. (2) A list of railroad company names, with the abbreviation codes used in the main table, and (3) A listing of the publications in which the photos are to be found, listed in order of the codes used in the main table.
Future plans call for implementation of this data as an Internet-installed database with a user-friendly system permitting convenient searches by railroad name and wheel arrangement. This current implementation is provided on an interim basis, and is less user-friendly than would be desirable. It is used as follows.
1. To find photographs for locomotives of a given railroad, look up its abbreviation in the "Railroad Name" table.
2. Select the "Main Table".
3. Scroll thriough the main table selection to find the entries for the locomotives of interest. Note the reference codes (REFKEY) for the photos of interest.
4. Select the "Reference" section and scroll to the codes for the references of interest, to find the detailed bibliographical information for the publication containing the photograph.
The fields in the main table are as follows:
CODE: The abbreviation for the railroad name, as provided in the Railroad Names table.
NUMBER: The identification of the individual locomotive.
WHLARR: The wheel arrangement of the locomotive.
CF: "Confidence" If a question mark is present, the wheel arrangement is uncertain.
NG: Narrow gauge. If an "X" is present, this is a narrow gauge locomotive.
DATE: Calendar date the photo was taken, if known. Might specify the month only.
YEAR: Year the photo was taken, if known.
LOCATION: If known, the city in or near which the photo was taken.
ST: The state within which the photo was taken.
CL: If a "C" is present, this is a color photo.
REFKEY: The abbreviation code for looking up the bibliographical information for the publication.
VOL: For periodicals only, the volume number or the year of publication.
NO: For periodicals only, the number or month of the publication.
PAGE: The page number on which the photo appears.
