R&LHS Annual Convention set for May 19-22

INDIANA RAILS 2005

Make plans now to attend the R&LHS Annual Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. This event is hosted by the Indiana Rail Road Company and will feature a special excursion train on their line. The convention hotel is the Crowne Plaza Indianapolis Union Station. A block of rooms has been reserved at the rate of $139 per night for one to four persons. Rooms with additional amenities and rooms which comprise one-half of a standard heavyweight Pullman car are available at slightly higher rates. Room reservations may be made direct at (317) 631-2221. Be sure to mention R&LHS when making reservations.

Indianapolis was the site of the first union station in the country. The first railroad reached the city in 1847, and by 1853 there were seven lines. The Indianapolis Union Railway was established in 1850 and the union station opened in 1853. The existing structure replaced the original depot in 1888. The Crowne Plaza guest rooms have been incorporated into the trackage area. Recommended reading between now and the meeting is Railroads of Indiana by Richard S. Simons and Francis H. Parker published by Indiana University Press in 1997.

The planned schedule for the event is as follows:

Thursday, May 19—R&LHS Board of Directors meeting at 2:00 PM. The board meeting is open to all Society members and will include the report of the Mission Committee (see below), the adoption of the Society budget, the Railroad History report, the election of Society officers and other business. An informal fellowship gathering will follow the board meeting.

Friday, May 20—Early morning departure from the hotel by chartered motor coach to Connersville, Indiana. From Connersville, ride the Whitewater Valley Railroad to the historic canal town of Metamora and return. The Whitewater Valley operates on a portion of the former New York Central Whitewater branch which extended from Valley Junction, Ohio, to Beesons, Indiana. Horse-drawn canal boats operate on a restored portion of the Whitewater Canal through Metamora. This location was featured on the cover of the 2004 Indiana State Travel Guide. Lunch included, return to hotel by bus. The evening is free. John’s perspective and insights reflected in these pages.
