Front cover:
No. 0951, a 2-8-2 built in Tangshan, China, in 1975,
was one of two Mikados operated on demand at the Muling
(or Lishu) Coal Mine near Jixi. Like the steam engine,
the composite coal gondola in the foreground, once ubiquitous,
is rapidly disappearing from China’s rail scene.
