Medal, R&LHS’s highest honor. The presentation was made August 8 by Mark Entrop, chairman of the R&LHS awards committtee. John H. White, Jr., the 2011 award winner, was present for the event.

At age 88, Hauck declined to seek reelection as director or reappointment as vice president, so his retirement took effect at the annual meeting in Madison in May, where the board thanked him for his major contributions in astutely managing the reserve fund and the newer library fund.

Hauck, who joined R&LHS in 1943 as a freshman at Williams College, attended his first annual meeting in 1977 and was elected a director. His start as financial advisor came when President Howard Greene asked him to place the savings accounts left by founder Charles Fisher in an investment fund. A commitment to growth equities enabled the fund to increase in value over the years. He was elected vice president in 1983; a profile appeared in Railroad History 149 that year. After the elected term ended, titles changed and he was appointed vice president at large and vice president of finance. When Fred Stindt was president, Hauck suggested publication of a newsletter and helped start a modest publication advertising program.

Reflecting on his years of service, Hauck said: “Providing leadership in the preservation of railroad history was perhaps the most important function of the Society in early years—when pioneering leadership was sorely needed—and it still is one of our important purposes. But service to members—and providing valuable benefits to those who are supporting the society—is not just important but essential to keep in mind. Our journal Railroad History is our most important product both as a member benefit and as a means of furthering interest in the history of railroading.”

His profile, from his time as vice president-finance, provides a view of his community service and family.

Haehnle Advertising 1948-50
Guenther, Brown & Berne Advertising/Rollman Advertising 1950-67
Bartlett & Co. 1967-2009

Williams College (BA) 1943-45, 1947-48
U.S. Army 1945-46
Univ. of Arizona, Graduate School, 1950-51

Miami Purchase Assn./Historic Southwest Ohio Inc./ Cincinnati Preservation Assn.
