Rob Leachman

The David P. Morgan Article Award for 2013 goes to Dr. Robert Leachman for his “Fresh from the West: Union Pacific’s Efforts to Promote Pacific Fruit Express Traffic in the 1970s,” which appeared in The Streamliner, the magazine of the Union Pacific Historical Society, Spring 2012 (Vol. 26, No. 2), pp. 6-22. This is the first of a two-part series.

Leachman, a professor of industrial engineering and operations research at the University of California, Berkeley, has written a thoroughly researched and very readable account of Union Pacific’s efforts to reverse the downward trend its perishable traffic was experiencing in the 1960s and the 1970s. Many of the photographs to illustrate the article were taken by Leachman, who also proves to be an accomplished photographer. He is the author of Northwest Passage from Hundman Publishing Co. (1998), the story of the Burlington Northern in the Pacific Northwest, 160 pages including 39 of his photographs. He is on the Board of Directors of the Union Pacific Historical Society.

R&LHS gives the article award annually to an author who has published a distinguished article of lasting value about some aspect of railroad history.

The citation appeared in Railroad History 209, Fall-Winter 2013.
